How to low level format or write zeros (Erase) to a WD hard drive or SSHD

Western Digital provides software utilities that can erase all the data on a hard drive. Erasing a drive is recommended any time an operating system is to be reinstalled on a boot drive or whenever a blank drive is desired.

All of the methods described below can be performed on a PC, but some are not available to be used on Mac OSX. In order to low level format a hard drive on a Mac, please contact Apple for assistance.

IMPORTANT Important: If the hard drive includes a Western Digital Virtual CD-Rom (VCD) drive, this partition will not be removed by performing a low-level format on the drive.
